The Enhanced Rider Scheme
The DSA, in conjunction with the motorcycle industry, have devised a
new package of training known as the
Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS).
The scheme is intended to benefit
all bike riders who have a full motorcycle licence, irrespective to
the size of bike, or the experience level of the rider.
You will not need to take a
test or even any training if your skills are assessed as
satisfactory. You will also earn discounts on your
insurance as a result.
How does it work?
The
DSA working closely with training experts have developed a training
syllabus for post test riders designed to reduce risk and improve an
individual rider’s skills.
They are establishing a network of approved and accredited trainers
across Britain to deliver rider skills assessments and any
recommended training.
Bike
riders visit their local accredited trainer for an assessment of
their riding skills.
If no significant area of weakness is found, the trainer issues a
certificate to that effect.
Any rider issued with a certificate is then in line for an insurance
discount from one of the many insurers who have signed up to support
the scheme
If there are areas that would benefit from further
training, the rider would qualify for their certificate after
successfully completing the recommended training.
By undertaking
an assessment of your riding ability, DSA accredited trainers can
tailor a development programme to suit your individual needs via a
combination of practical and theoretical learning. Many of the
leading motorcycle insurers have signed up to this scheme and are
prepared to offer substantial discounts to riders who can show they
can ride to the ERS standard.
The insurers sponsoring
the scheme are:
AA Insurance,
Bennett’s Insurance, Bikesure, Carole Nash,
Chandler Direct, CIA insurance, Devitt, EBike,
MCE Insurance, Motorcycle Direct, Norwich Union
Direct and Lexham.
The Enhanced Rider Bonus is
supported by the following underwriters:
AIG,
AXA, Chaucer Insurance, Equity Red Star,
Groupama, Hastings Direct, Highway, KGM,
Link/Zenith, NIG, Norwich Union and
Royal & Sun
Alliance.
Advanced Course
3 Days of Instruction
spread over a number of weeks to suit you. The course consists of
theory presentations, self study, and practical on road training.
The
course culminates with a RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle Test. The
RoSPA test qualification is deemed to be the highest award available
to the general public.
The
qualification is widely recognised by many of the leading Insurance
Companies who can offer discounts on Motorcycle Insurance to
successful test candidates. RoSPA also arrange a re-test every three
years so you have the opportunity to keep your riding skills
up-dated at regular intervals. Your Instructor is a current RoSPA Examiner; he will know exactly what is required for you to be
successful on your test.

How the RoSPA Advanced test is graded
BRONZE
This Grade will
be awarded to riders whose performance is significantly above the
standard required to pass the ‘L’ Riding Test. These Riders will
also show knowledge of “Motorcycle
Roadcraft”.
The Ride should be entirely safe,
observing traffic signs, responding correctly to hazards and should
display advanced riding techniques.
SILVER
This Grade
will be awarded to riders who are well above the average. These
riders will produce consistently safe and systematic rides but
perhaps without the final polish, flair and smoothness of the Gold
Riders. They will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the ‘System of
Motorcycle Control’. Candidates must be able to ride up to the
permitted speed limit where it is safe to do so but vary speed
according to circumstances and conditions. It must be emphasised
that silver is an extremely high grade and is a commendable
achievement.
GOLD
This
Grade is recognised as the highest riding award available to the
Public. It will be awarded only to the polished systematic rider,
who displays a complete understanding and appropriate application of
the principles outlined in “Motorcycle
Roadcraft”. The
candidate’s performance must be consistent throughout the whole of
the test and so any lapses may result in a lower grade. Awards of
this grade will therefore be reserved for the very best riders.
